Deferred revenue is a message queue: payment enqueues 12 messages; each month's recognition job dequeues one into the P&L. The balance sheet shows queue depth; the P&L shows throughput. "Balance = unconsumed messages" — if the schedule and the balance disagree, your consumer is skipping or double-processing.
